Nakamichi Cassette deck maintenance :-Three staff from Nakamichi Japan joined our company in 1988 after leaving their roles as supervisors in the audio and sales departments. They are Shimada Toshihiko, Kobayashi San and Hiko San. They managed our semiconductor sales operations in Japan. One of them, who still works with us in ASMPT Japan, he mentioned that isopropyl alcohol (IPA) is typically used to clean magnetic heads, capstans, and rollers. However, he noted that IPA might harden the roller material over time. To address this, I opted for a light application of glass cleaning fluid on the rollers, followed by drying with cotton swabs. For the magnetic heads, I avoided IPA entirely since Nakamichi’s design uses sintered materials bonded for better frequency response.
While TDK and Sony demagnetizing tapes are effective for head cleaning, their results are subtle. We agreed that experimenting with these methods was insightful. A key advantage of using TDK/Sony cassette tape cleaning kits is that they do not alter the head’s geometric alignment. Despite this, most maintenance manuals recommend cotton swabs dipped in IPA (alcohol) for routine cleaning due to cost considerations. Remarks I think they are professional enough on application maintenance of Nakamichi cassette deck
