Why Employees leave the Company!?

Most of the companies face with the people leaving the company for better prospect, or pay of better working environment, or better respect they can get.
Early this year, Kumar, a senior software designer, got an offer from a prestigious international firm to work in its India operations developing specialized software. He was thrilled by the offer.

He had heard a lot about the CEO. The salary was excellent which is about two times the same offer from other local firms. The company had all the right systems in place employee-friendly human resources policies, a brand new office and the very best technologies even a canteen that served food like the Shangri-la Hotel.

Kumar was sent abroad for some technical training with some of the senior staff working more than 15 years in the company. "My learning curve is the sharpest it's ever been," he said soon after he joined.

Less than four months after he joined, Kumar decided walked out of the job.

Why did this talented employee leave?

Kumar quit for the same reason that drives many good people away.

The answer lies in one of the largest studies undertaken by the Gallup Organization. The study surveyed over a million employees and 80,000 managers and was published in a book called "First Break All The Rules". It came up with this surprising finding: Immediate boss is the reason people stay and thrive in an organization. And he’s the reason why people leave... "People leave managers not companies."

Mostly manager drives people away? HR experts say that of all the abuses, employees find humiliation the most intolerable. Many manager is micromanaging their employees, never tell them what to do whereby give them freeway and chances to make mistakes, and after that blame them not smart enough, every one tends to make mistake ,bigger manager makes bigger mistake naturally.
Two weeks ago, there is a Secondary school teacher ended her life jumping from the window of her school. Just because she could not stand the intangible pressure from school master who scolded her not able sell more lunch boxes to her students! The life of a professional teacher in Hong Kong is valued of a few lunch boxes!
This is the stress that only your staff knows, but not you, You can blame them for their low EQ! But how has such a high EQ since they are borne?

There are a lot good managers work for the same company for more than 30 years., they are the best of the bunch…They will make use of themselves a model for their younger employees as a way to measure their performance. The worst part of it is that they expect the same deliverables as they are!

They earn Hundred Thousands a year whilst you earn few millions, how can you expect they produce the same output as yours?

As the manager ha the supreme power to judge that his employee is doing right or wrong. Once he asks is the bird alive or dead in his hand, his employee answer “Alive”, then he could squeezed and suffocated the bird to dead. On the other hand, if the answer “Dead”, he would open his finger and set free the bird… The employer side is always on the leeward side. This is one of the reasons they feel frustrates they have no way to ask the same question to his superiors.
Different managers can stress out employees in different ways - by being too controlling, too suspicious, too pushy, too critical, but they forget that workers are not fixed assets, they are free agents. When this goes on too long, an employee will quit - often over a trivial issue.
Talented men leave. Dead wood doesn't.

"Jack Welch of GE once said. A company's value lies "between the ears of its employees

It is possible for Chinese to run a big Multi-national business?

There is avery sucessfull midium size company, running by a few experienced people. Snce they are the best kind of management people from the Industry, other staff and subordinates listen to them, follow their instructions...learn from them.

In a kind of a Chinese culture company, most of the Top management likely intend to go for micro management, it is almost true for those who work for year and bring up the copmaby fro mlittle to Today decent size. They would not likely trust others who has been classied "New" in this company.

They manage everything, from hiring, organization fine tuning, Product development, shipment plan. Salary review, business direction, signing cheque of trivial value $100, and basically they manage everything no matter big or small. They work late, and work hard, they are busy and sometimes too busy to lose their business focus!

When they chair the meeting, they ask for comment and suggestion and all presented proposal will likely be dropped them all afterwards. Then the TG will present his priory prepare proposal and ask for comment! Naturally, everyone says “That is the best” and everyone will use it…So this is Chinese Democracy!?

In days, this kills all good ideas and the Top Management still thinks their idea is simply the BEST! New idea is not encouraged as a consequent result. No one would present a good idea to them as they know any good idea is not good enough. In turn, they would hide their suggestion and better try not to be too outstanding in order to keep the job!

For some of the big firm that the founder started himself long time ago and grow to such sizable comonay if today. They will not trust the outsider and would pass the company it to their next of kin or son if they have... No Matter they are the kind of people who is able to run the business or not.. This is in fact limit the possibility for better growth of the comapny. Moreover, their influence is always there until the day they pass away, menaing that their way f business will not have take bold changes, organization structural changes or rely on hands of outsider. Most of the Chinese owner companies are having simialr pattern of business model. Those they are a lot of successful company, but not MNC!

In these kind of company, middle management team needs not to be high calibre people... Their. survival tools are “just to be obedient” and do not to be smart. The bottom layer of staff are a bunch of doers, workers, instruction followers only.

Pros... The company grow under such strong leader, since not new idea and the company can only make organic growth, they do not buy concept of M&A... so they company is usually diminishing into smaller in size. Seldom can grow to the scale of a Multi Billion Company.

Cons. There is hard to find successor or even not intend to bring up a successor, once the TM is retired, then has to hand over to a bunch of middle management team and the company would lose it glory gradually, eventually either go for chapter Eleven or being acquired by the competitors.

I did not address the topics., my point is, very rare for Chinese to run a sucessful MNC. We have not seen many example of sucessful one. Do we!?

MNC stands for Multi National Company

Sense of Responsibility

CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
Company wise consideration, people want more. Customers want more than the products and services they buy. They want to be sure the people they are handling their money are responsible companies. Customers and share holders want to know the companies they do business with or invest on have a sense of responsibility not simply to their profit margins, they have a sense of shared future, that the companies will ravage the world or manipulate to the point of destruction, that they will not take advantage to cause any hardship, nor creating any social issues such as unemployment, environmental contaminations and wastes. They will not create problems in the name of the maximization of profit regardless of consequence. This is a natural expectation from customers of developed world.

Consumers and responsible companies want to be sure who they do business with will contribute to the society. German company has an industrial control on all their product in order to promote the image on the sense of Responsibility to the society, all packaging material is not allowed to have poisonous soluble ink pigment. The use of CFC material is not allowed on the packing of the commodities. Car manufacturer like BMW has said it is prepared for the European End of Life Vehicles (ELV) Directive by ensuring its vehicles are recyclable to the necessary standards. Over 85% of the material of the BMW is re-cycle-able.

This is corporate responsibility. It is a highly visible image of a company far removed from the drive to increase profits - yet essential for today’s world where people have a choice - and they choose to spend wisely and with responsibility.

We seek to become more successful in the future will be required to have a visible sense of responsibility - and work within society to create sustainability.

There may be an interesting question on what is the responsibility. If there is a way to identify and or quantify the responsibility, then there will be limited responsibility.
One day when I return home, I saw that there was a lot of Timothy hay in front of my flat. My daughter later told me that she was doing the house keeping on the bunny’s cage and she dumped all the dirty hay in front to the house.… So I was hysterically mad about my self as I was the one to teach my beloved daughter to have a sense of responsibility. Later on she said the cleaner would come to clean the building at night. That may be her excuses!

The same case happened on employee, sense of Responsibility. Take for an example if there is some one who dropped a hand phone in a crowded in MTR? I bet you may not pick up for her, but you would remind her something she had dropped. Just because nowadays people mind is too complex and hard to identify the thence-after consequence… He may think that other people would think that he is trying to please the girl. He may think that the girl may mis-undtserdtand that his intention to help her….

Similar case in a MTR carriage, who would want to give seat for a pregnant lady? But no one would start the move… and let’s see who is the one would stand up and offer the seat first. Some time and quite often, the woman find no one is offering a seat to her. Simply the people is too much worry about other peoples thinking on his intention. And always had not confidence to face with failure when the pregnant would reject the seat offer!

People now away are too much nervous and over-cautious on everything they do in front of the public….That may be worse when communicate with his boss.. They will try to speak only on good but void the bad news. Most of them would like to paint a beautiful picture rather than a FACT of life. That is a problem…

Little things are great for little man
We do not need a super colossal to make big thing every day as there seems not practical sometimes. But we do need people to make small contribution everyday on his position! That kind of contribution will becoming a big contribution to the Company
Same as Toyota :”Kaisin” programme, asking everyone to improve a bit in his best understanding on his position!

Now we have to face with probably century’s worst economy crisis. That cause most of the financial vehicle melt down, world largest bank to be diminished >80% in a few months, the layoff pile up…with 4,000,000 job loss in USA… and it is still worsened without knowing when that can come to an end…

The global semiconductor industry will continue to witness a revenue slump until 2013, forecasts research firm Gartner. The firm also said that worldwide semiconductor sales are projected to generate $194.5 billion in 2009.. World global chip sales dropped 31% in Jan 2009. That will keep sleeping until 2013…

Being world largest equipment supplier will inevitably been avoid to be affected…as We mostly rely on our semiconductor houses and assembly house for the purchase. We do have to follow the buying need for the whole semiconductor market in proportion. However if the market falls like it is now, we will not be staying unaffected. As IC market will not as good as 2008 been till 2013.

Discrete and power is depending on China drive for increasing the domestic consumption on domestic electrical appliance to rural districts. As Money talks, all depends which level of people and kinds of products will be a benefit to the trader, official and the end users, the money will be put into the market but it may take a few months to a year for the result to be visualized. Not until the current old stock of the specific product is consumed, there will be no new need for equipment, nor no new need for discrete or power device manufacturing equipment purchase.

Where as LED will be an emerging market due to the drives from various national energy clause for greener energy, the multiplication for more efficient illumination devices, household illumination, replacement incandescent light in Traffic light, for public TV, BLU for LCD TV and Hand phone and the need for decorative light and signage board…
We can see that the LED will carrying growth and at same time if we can have more penetration power for bigger market share there will be a lot of growth in it.

Being a staff of company, a sense of responsibility is to support the captains instruction in steering the ship at the rough seas... and whatever seasick would be temporary and once we surpassed the storm, there will be rainbow, and all we need is to cooperate and work hard 180 percent as I mentioned to Bloggers of mind, 130 percent so not enough at this time of the day…

Many a little makes a fickle, once if everyone would work as a team with strong believes that we will surpass the crisis and right next to the crisis will be another vertical growth of ASM…
And farther pull away from our competitors… as they are busy concentration on the cost cut, lay offs and as opposite, ASM staff is being up ourselves by creating more new product and more support to our customer’s and resolving all outstanding issues by our service engineers, when customer has a need for product they will make a wise selection on who they should work with….definitely we know the answer.

The important of the point is that everyone will stay alert for the crisis, keep our weapon sharpened and waiting of new synergy to come.

Misfortune tells us what fortune is

We needed to say, under such an order situation, we have to be more proactive to plan for the worse in the coming quarters.

When company is facing the finical challenge as their Economy tssuimai which might be the most severe on the whole century the legend if profit making company like Toyota, Sony could both be an exceptionally example to be escaped, Toyota and Honda had loss of 40% car sales in the first Quarter in 2009.
HSBC which has been running over 100 years in Hong Kong, the beloved preferred blue chip elephant of the elderly… now has to face with reality, the stock went down to a low value and no one can be sure when the bottom price that it would go before bounce back!

Our Company has been making profit for the past thirty seven years, now may have to face with the same problem as the Toyota and Honda.
I was always thought that there is no big task or operation guru can be done in one day, but little thing each time everyday will build a good company.

Do you have a sense of responsibility? The probability is ... yes. Most people do. Most of the employee does have a certain responsibility. How?

So what is sense of responsibility? I can say what ever they do in a company should be made for the benefit of the normal growth and sustainability if the company.
We can help manage the entire process from concept to implementation of running with complete visibility to ensure the maximum recognition with and viability of your brand.

This comes down to YOUR will to do the right thing, combined with OUR knowledge and experience.
Do the "right thing" and increase the impact of your organization. This is something the wider society desperately needs. Likewise, business needs to find the most effective mechanism of engaging the wider society in terms other than business, in terms that help people and allow people to see the organization as a caring and responsible organization.

People of the wider society are then far more likely to deal with the responsible organization for business and services. It's all about trust. This is something outside the normal parameters of profit.
Would you like to do the right thing? Would you want to be recognized as being responsible and of benefit to the wider society?
Would you like to discover the impact of sustainable development on your future?
Evolve into something better. Have a plan. Visualize.

9 Ways You Can Promote a Sense of Responsibility In our staff

1. Be a good role model
Your staff watch everything you do. If they see you as responsible, they will be more inclined to be more responsible.

2. Provide Structure
Empty talks has not affection on your peer, you have got to work as to show to your staff that hardworking is important in maintaining a drive for work force. People said work smart does not require to work hard, to certain extent, that is not right, as if smart guy works harder, the effect is no 1X multiple, but may be 10X multiple!
You can help your staff focus and succeed by creating a structure in which he can succeed. Coaching on the need for team work is our responsibility.

3. Help your staff to keep tack on the sales and service programme, production progress status
By creating lists, tally sheets or charts, your staff can monitor his own progress on sales and service activities. Resolving the problem of projects. This will remind her of the jobs he has yet to complete. It will also give their feelings of worth and pride when they see a task has been completed. This in turn promotes a sense of responsibility and high self-esteem.

4. Empowerment
Try to load more works to your staff provided they are being well monitored for progress and if they can handle it that will be on their own, the higher self-esteem they will have. Paradoxically, in many situations, the less you help them, the more you help your staff.

5. Set arm stretched goal for the staff
Do you demand 10M or 15 M sales per quarter’s ion their territory? Set some guide line for them in their forecast for your expectations may be too specific and too high; or, if he meets those standards, he may be doing so for your benefit, not their own, so their success might not contribute to his self-esteem.

6. Allow adequate time for the task. To learn new products, to do sales pitches, to finish sales reports . It takes time to process new information. The sales team who is rushed may follow directions by mimicking what you are doing, but probably will not understand the significance of the task or process the new proposal. Also, if you feel rushed, you may be applying pressure to your sales team, and they may become discouraged. So remember that building responsibility takes time.

7. Keep encourage your staff. There is some traditional practice of discouraging by picking up their mistake and error made in the process of mnaufcayring, sales visit, or deficientin service a customer with satisfactionj. There is very mimimum encouragement to staff most of the time.
That does not mean that you are not cool enough to be his boss, instead your are more human l as your become more professional in distinguish between so called “ good” and “bad”.
When a staff is occasionally discouraged either by the weight of his responsibility or by his failure to be responsible, you can counteract such discouragement by reminding him of his successes in previously performed tasks. Talk to them that
Remember we did that last time you had a lot of sales order. Do only one thing at a time, like you did last time. If you get stuck on anything leave it, and we will help you when we meet in the Monday meeting. And, don’t become overwhelmed. You always manage. I'm always impressed with how well you handle all this work."

8. High light the logical consequences of irresponsible behaviour. Once you are certain that your staff is capable of performing a task and has had enough time to do so, he needs to experience the consequences (the effects) of irresponsibility (the cause). These consequences should be neither punitive nor abusive.

9. Support your staff become responsible by establishing fair, sensible guide lines for them to follow up.
We all need guide line, staff and managers alike. They serve as boundaries to establish what is and is not acceptable practice. Managers begin setting boundaries for their team mates. To be effective, the guide lines need to be well thought out, logical, and fair to all involved. In conclusion, as responsibility is essential to the development of good character and business success, it is wise for manager to give thought to how they can facilitate the process. If your goal is to have an educated, responsible, well-adjusted sales team, production engineer, your whole division team needs to work together, sometimes making sacrifices, to achieve that goal. Will it be easy? No. But it will be well worth your time and energy!

Enhance your strength and Manage your weakness

This is a tradition way to ask your speer to tell him his weaknesses and do all the best to improve them! but some how this is tedious and may not get the desired result.

Some how we should stay away from your weakness and emphasis on your strength. It is natural to ask a man of 5 feet 2 to peform board diving and is a dump encourage to ask him to go for 100M Free style swimming as he is too short for that, On the other hand he is 100% built for for board diving.

Tiger Woods os not as good as his grass on his sand performance, he knows and keep his time for grass and it is not worth to spend time on sand...

It is a time wasting for me to learn Mandarin as my tongue is not able to twist and it is better to ask me to speed Japanese or Thai .... and I have spent 4 years learning Japanese. More than 20 years picking up Thai, but I did no spend much time in real learning.

So my key points are , do not spend time on your weakness and rather aimming on your strength improvement, that will be more fruitful!

CSR

Melamine
Milk-derived ingredients include whole milk powder, non-fat milk powder, whey powder, lactose powder, and casein has been widely used on many of the food made in New Zealand, Canada, USA, Japan other than China. This milk companies including Sanlu, Menggu, had been using these uncertified milks from the milk farmers on their product carrying their Brand name. Their Top management should have no excused saying they would not know the use of such mail contained Melamine. China image has been eroded as a national wide disaster, as for the Sanlu Milk company, it went Bankrupt last week, which was not a surprise to me.

CSR
CSR, also called Corporate Social Responsibility, corporate citizenship, responsible business and corporate social opportunity. It is a concept whereby companies and organizations consider the interests of the society taking responsibility for the impact of their activities on customer, suppliers, employees, share holders, communities and other stake holder as well as the environment. This obligation is seen to extend beyond the statutory obligation to comply with legitration and sees organizations voluntarily taking further steps to improve the quality of life for employees and their families as well as for the local community and Global society at large.

The practice of CSR is subject to much debate and criticism. Proponents argue that there is a strong business case for CSR, in that corporations benefit in multiple ways by operating with a perspective broader and longer than their own immediate, short-term profits. Critics argue that CSR distracts from the fundamental economic role of businesses; others argue that it is nothing more than superficial window-dressing; still others argue that it is an attempt to preempt the role of governments as a watchdog over powerful Multinational Corporation.
CSR is a way to care and support the company, employees, customer, society locally and globally!

Typical local example of the CSR caring acts:
No Lay off
1,000 company agreed not to lay off, these company include To Heng restaurant, Sasa cosmetic, Café-de Carol…it won applause of the citizens of Hong Kong,

Our CEO has also saying that we do not have such lay off culture and we will do our best to cut 10% of our running cost in December 2008, another 10% Q1 2009, and probably 10% Q3 2009. We will like to work together to believe the target. this include energy saving, budget control and at the same time we even increase the cost of R&D… for better capture of future order when business arrives!

There are a few categories of companies.
1. Running for survival, no profit, layout is the usual practice in case of low business
2. Running with profit, cash cow of high profit margin, can maintain the running of the operation in for 3-6 months without any loan
3. Running without the support of loans for 1-2 years even without any bank loan support.

I believe that only type three companies can have full contribution in CSR as a company direction and CSR involves a large scale company direction.
Carbon Dioxide emission measurement.
We have to set a target in controlling the amount of this emission per year.

A CSR company
Build good product with emphasis on the Green value contribution to the society.
Reduces all kind of wates and CO2 emission!
Use green packing material, no or in case we can not, use less packing material.
Promotion to all employees and customer in the CSR.
Build good quality product that will not cause any harm, hazards and contaimination.
CSR is not a image building slogan, it is a department not under PR or Admin., It is a team that drive the company to contribute to the benefit of employees, customer, suppliers and clients and the peoples using our products, building the products.

Apple

Apple is one of the 100 brands in the world, we see a repid growth of 24% in 2008!

They have the following successful factors:
Beautiful product
The product has new gadget and feature
Unique product
Hi technology
Building up An Unique Image
Create a trend same as Swatch as it did in 1986-1993.

All Iphone and Apple Note books is using the best LED from one of the LED makers in USA as on the Back Light units! This is a high cost high performance LED for note book and Mobile phone!

Only uncompromised people will not hesitate to put high quaility components in his product...

Best 100 Brands

Through the Interbrand, you can see that there is the best brand names in the world.

These are the best brands announced in July 2008.
You could see those finance and banking firms had been dropped dramatically comparing with last year.

1. Coca Cola
2. IBM
3, Microsoft
4. GE
5. Nokia
6. Toyota
7. Intel
8. Mcdonald
9. Disney
10. Google

From the 100 brand, we can see there are 52 from USA, 10 from Germany, 9 from France, 7 from Japan, and two from Korea.

Note that there are some rising stars as H&M, Apple and Nintendo.

These are slow down companies
Morgan Stanley
Citi
Merrill Lynch
Gap

So where is those China and Hong Kong companies!?

This is what we need to take a note on why?

Going back in how they evaluate the brand name, they have certain successful factors:

Leadership
Loyal customer
Stability
Multinational market, Local and International market (at least 30%)
Trend
R & D and new technology
IP protection

So from all these brands, we see something common is that they have been working for quite some times and whereas our China and Hong Kong business men are mostly targeting for a comparatively short term Return on Investment.

They do not spending too much time improving the 7 factors, Take for an example, being a number one company in the industry, there are a lot of things that we have to do in order to maintain the No. 1 status and drop the runner up far away!

We have to keep on investing and run the company with high profit margin
Brand name promotion
leading in Technology
Answer to your customer on their needs quickly
Kit fit by exercise and cut down the fat.

A 10,000 people company is 100 times slower than a 1,000 people company!
Your weight is killing you as you can not move fast enough with the market!

PS
The CE should not spend too much time polishing on his presentation skill, spend time on the material he has prepared, his packaging of the administrative group, to spend time really on how to improving our livings, our economics, and some of the most important thing Chinese do, care about the old peoples!

Peter Principle

The Peter Principle is the principle that "In a Hierarchy Every Employee Tends to Rise to His Level of Incompetence." While formulated by Dr. Laurence J. Peter and Raymond Hull in their 1968 book The Peter Principle, a humorous treatise which also introduced the "salutary science of Hierarchiology", "inadvertently founded" by Peter, the principle has real validity.

It holds that in a hierarchy members are promoted so long as they work competently. Sooner or later they are promoted to a position at which they are no longer competent (their "level of incompetence"), and there they remain.

Peter's Corollary states that "in time, every post tends to be occupied by an employee who is incompetent to carry out his duties" and adds that "work is accomplished by those employees who have not yet reached their level of incompetence".

Model Employee

If you agree to carry the calf, they will make you carry a cow.

This sentence carries two meanings;
If once you know that you can carry certain responsibility and that is within your capability, then there is always s way that your management team or your boss will top up some more works on to your shoulder. So if you think positively, you would be glad to take the responsibility, sooner later you will be doing more advanced work than you are supposed to handle. This can be a very natural move for your boss to promote you when the time comes.

GIE, Global Integration Enterprises which means that we have to select the best people in the right place at the right time for the best benefit of the company. If this GIE meets the right proactive staff, the promotion is just within days to come!

See yourself as the valuable person you are. Leave all inhibitions behind. If
you feel inferior to your coworkers or supervisors, your meek attitude will
top you from shining.. Before heading out to work, look at yourself in the
mirror and have a long conversation with yourself. Speak positive
affirmations about yourself and your life. Do it every morning and feel the
energy of success seep into your entire being. Some successful executive
has to listen to his favourite music before leaving for office. He may read a
chapter of his favourite book.

Recognize your own worth and visualize yourself succeeding beyond your
wildest dreams. In your mind, form a clear picture of where you would like
to be, of where you would be the happiest. Do you want to work behind a
desk; do you want a position in marketing, in Sales or service team
member? If you can visualize it in your mind before it ever comes to pass,
you can achieve it. Because your level of expectancy will be higher, you will
be charged with more energy to accomplish what you want.

Your boss always pick up some of your error and mistake, do not be
frustrated as that is your strength, he sees your strength and he can only
find mistake on your strength. If you feel frustrated on that you are totally
wrong…you should be happy with that. As you boss is trying to make
you perfect! As you know there is never any perfect staff nor executive.
JFK is blamed to be having no much experience and he was the
youngest president at that time, but his strength is having a passion to
be serving the people, the country and all these good basic requirement
to be a a good president.

Let go of the fear of success. Too often, our inner voice haunts us with
negative messages, such as "you will lose all your friends if you get
promoted, you will never be able to handle all the responsibility, and you
don't have enough education." Don't give in to the fear. Replace every
negative thought with positive thoughts, such as, "I am able, I am
equipped, I have what it takes to accomplish my dreams, I have the right
to be successful, I am not afraid, I am powerful, I can do."

How to control stage fear, see the past presidents, most of the had to
face with these issues, but they have his own way to solve the problem
and turn this to be a power tool for attracting the audience

These are the few ways
Deep breath before you start the first few word. Look at the people
forehead, half an inch above their eyes middle of forehead, to them he
see you have a close eye contact, to you, you could feel more easily to
wait for the stage fear to go away in few seconds to a minute… after
that, nothing is difficult.

Hold something in your palm, like a paper clip, one coin; you can be
more focus in your speech. Beware not to make any noise from it.
Try to perform rehearsal in your material in advance is very important
and helpful
The audience is all on your side they do no want to see you to have
good presentation… so you do not have to worry too much they will give
you a difficult question.

Don't wait until you are in a better position to change your behaviour.
Always try to do more is the way to get people to like you more. Do it
now so your supervisors can take notice of you and promote you when a
new position opens up. Take initiative.
Take an inventory of your personal appearance. Is your hairstyle
Appropriate, is your new hair colour a culture of the company? Are your
clothes neat and pressed, is your posture stooped, giving you the look of
defeat and fear? Make necessary changes so you can project a
confident image.

Remember, you may not feel confident, but you can act confident. With time, your fear will be replaced with genuine confidence.

Can Do Spirit of HK

"Can Do"

A Chinese-derived expression much admired by Japanese business executives is Juunansei, (a kanji or "borrowed character") which translates as flexibility, or more broadly in English as a "can do" approach to negotiating and operating. A recently-published Japanese think-tank analysis of Hong Kong's attractiveness as a business centre identified this "can do" element as a vital ingredient.

It's also an expression that is translating into practical business success for Japanese firms arriving in Hong Kong. There's no coincidence that these companies have each adopted a strategic approach to entering the Chinese mainland – and for this purpose using Hong Kong as a key to unlocking opportunities, often in conjunction with the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone across the boundary.........

We have been using this slogan of “Can Do” spirit since 2000, we product involving R&D, Design, manufacturing and servicing in the Semiconductor assembly equipment. This product profilio lies from low end Aluminum wedge bonder of USD25,000.00, typical mid level die bonder for LEDs of USD150,000.00 to a Camera Module assembly in line system of USD1,200,000.00 high value product. Well, it is a complex world of competitivess, competition, technology benchmarking, local copy cat that bits our market share using stolen intelligence properties from us! Sophisticated customer expectation with up-coming of new process that drive you crazy to shorten the product development cycle time. A typical product development start from Conceptual design to mature bug free product for delivery to customer aiming of a plug and play runs in less than 1.5 years!
We do not have any luxury anymore as ten years ago!

The spirit of Can Do goes in par with the typical Hong Kong People work eithics….
We have no resources like petroleum, land, water, nor heavy industrial back bone. We have only dynamic people who are having adaptive street smarts and energetic effort driving for better result. Our Education level is not the highest in Asia, fall behind Japan and Singapore. English is not as common and as proficient as Sinagpore, may be a bit better thah Japan and some part of China. The container harbour was once the biggest in the world on 2006 and 2nd behind Singapore in 2007, has already been overtaken by Shenzhen Yin Tian of China now. The airport is the world largest in term of cargoes tonnage in 2007, but in the process of renovation for better efficiency or will be tarnished as compared with Singapore or Frankfurt’s.

We have been named as world financial centers as New York, Tokyo and London.
China is supplying Hong Kong quietly and honesty in the past 50 years, we have fresh water supply from China in 1970, food stock and poultry were all imported from China.
When we have SARS in 2003, China shipped 20 millions of mask to Hong Kong by air in a couple of days When the Olympian Games came to an end all the gold medalist went to Hong Kong immediate the week after for demonstration show before their fans in Hong Kong. Blood is thicker than water. This is a way that we should contribute when China needs us…and this is one way to can show Can Do to maintain the glory of the Pearl of China.

The Can Do starts from a reform of our culture fro Traditional Confucian to these new ideas of independence and industrialization. We need to have to tell the other people that we can be better in order to maintain the position of job in a company, we have to show to our friend that we have achieved what we should have in term of economic achievement, social exposure, we are not loser in front of Giant and at we feel no fear in fighting with enermy for our national esteem.

Self esteem is one of the driver for Can Do, when you are facing with 1,000 people before the speech, you have to recall all your rehearsal and run though in your mind one again, make a deep berth and speak it out, watch out for the response and to be synchronized wah the audience.

Can do is a proactive slogan, that is a spirit, and of course nothing isn’t “Can do!” But it would help push the People to the limit on the psychological side to pursue for better result. And to offer customer satisfaction in our department of marketing! In my philosophy, Customer will buy from because of you first then your product!
It is not my word but thousand of successful marketing and management gurus.

It is a way to promote the righteous spirit of odor subordinate. And they will one day suing the same method for driving their colleagues and their subordinates.

The Can Do is not just a along now in our company but it has been transplanted as heart pulsar in every one’s heart of us in the Company.
This goes with 120% effort and we are sure that we are doing a lot more than 120% for some of our colleagues….

Now the US economy is dropping…. Leeman Brothers, AIG….

I often tell myself: It is always darkest before day dawn!

Customer Service

I am sharing with you the story of this young man:

This young guy, from China, moved to Florida and went to a big "everything-under-one-roof" Department Store looking for a job. The Manager asked: "Do you have any sales experience?"

The young man replied: "Yeah. I was a Salesman back in China."

Well, the boss liked the man and gave him the job. "You may start work tomorrow. I'll come down after closing and let us review your performance."

The young man’s first day was tough but he managed to get through it.

After the Store was closed, the Manager came down and inquired:"How many items have you sold to the customers today?"

The reply came - "Just one.”"

The boss exclaimed:"Just one? Each of our Sales persons clocked an average 20 to 30 customers a day. How much was the sale?"

The young man replied: "$151,237.65."

The boss queried: "$151,237.65? Tell me, what did you sell?"

The reply from the young man was:
"First, I sold him a small fish hook. After that, I sold him a medium fish hook followed by a larger fish hook. Subsequently, I sold him a new fishing rod. Then I asked him where he was going fishing and he told me - down the coast. So I inquired if he needs a boat. Then we went down to the Boat Department and I sold him a twin-engine Chris Craft. Soon, he said he did not think his Honda Civic would pull it, so I took him down to the Automotive Department and sold him that BMW X5…”

This story did not end up here!

Immediate I have thought about our sales. It is not good enough to just push for more sales revenue. We need to offer the best service support to our customers. When we can do that, I strongly believe that the result will be a multiple function of effort, sincerity, honesty, persistence and self confidence!

My first job
My first sales job started in 1985 as a salesman for Siemens. My product line included Siemens Computer, Kraekramer GMBH and Siemens Ink Jet printer which was selling at a price of HKD6000. At that time, a Cannon Bubble jet printer was just HKD1200. Who could be the customers? My immediate focus was on people working in an environment which required a very low noise resonance from the printer – this was the advantage of the Siemens Ink Jet printer. I found a very good customer who had a security firm in United Centre. They sent me order regularly and he was one of customers, in Hong Kong, to use the printer! He needed a very quiet printer as there were lots of investors working his office. If not for the ink jet printer, it would be too noisy! This will cause an impact to the clients in a security company!

Too expensive to sell!

I still recalled that I represented one of the NDT ultrasonic flaw detector. By visiting my customer HEACO, MTR, Tram car company, China shipyard and CMB, I learned a lot about their needs. I found out why they had to buy the most expensive NDT flaw defector equipment in the world. I became more confident after I sold the first most expensive and sophisticated flaw detector to HAECO. I learned this valuable point: if you think that they will not buy your product, you need not visit them as they will never buy. Same theory applies - if you think that your product is too expensive, you will never be able to sell it to anybody!

Maintaining loyal customer- After Sales Support
I derived a lot of satisfaction in the sales job although I never talked about anything about the product selling after the first successfully transaction was done. The customers kept on buying because they like the after-sales-support - this is one of the key factors for maintaining a loyal customer.

Highest Caliber people- Ability to have Leadership

After years of observation and experience, the highest paid personnel in Engineering may not necessarily be a person who knows the most about Engineering. One can, for example, hire mere technical ability in Engineering, Accountancy, Architecture or any other professional at nominal salaries. It is the person who has technical knowledge plus the ability to assume leadership, to express ideas and to arouse enthusiasm amongst people – such a person will head for higher earning power.

In the heyday of his activities, John D. Rockefeller said that “the ability to deal with people is as purchasable as commodity such as sugar or coffee. And I will pay more for that ability,” said John D., “than for any other under the sun.”

Serving customer
Criticism is futile because it puts a person on the defensive mode and usually makes him strive to justify himself. Criticism is dangerous because it wounds a person’s precious pride, hurt his sense of importance and arouse resentment.

The Desire to be important
There is only one way under the sky to get anybody to do anything. Did you ever stop to think of that? Yes, there is one way. That is by motivating the other person to do it willingly.

John Dewey, one of American’s profound philosophers, phrased it a bit differently. Dr. Dewey said that the deepest urge in human nature is “the desire to be important”.

John D Rockefeller got this feeling of importance by donating money to erect a modern hospital in Beijing to care for millions of people whom he had never seen and never would see! Dillinger, got this feeling of importance by being a bank robber and killer. When FBI agents were hunting him, he dashed into a farm house in Minnesota and said “I am Dillinger!”. He was proud of the fact that he was Public’s number one enemy. “I won’t hurt you but I am Dillinger!” he said. The only significant difference between Dillinger and Rockefeller is how they got their feeling of importance.

Art of handling people, not technique!
Handling people is a kind of art and not just a technique. It blends with your experience in dealing with people, your character and education. There is no standard way or rules in handling people. The key points are to be sincere, do not pick on people’s minor mistakes and try to correct mistakes by offering chance for their improvement. At time, try to give people some kinds of minor appreciation. It can be as simple as offering a cup of coffee, buying a meal and a note of thanks. Treat all people with the same courtesy, regardless their positions and ranks.

Passion in your job
Howard Thurtson was the acknowledged Dean of magicians. More than 60 millions people had paid for admission to his show. He declared he never stepped in front of the footlights without first saying to himself over and over: “I love my audience. I love my audience.” Ridiculous? Absurd? You are entitled to think anything you like. I am merely passing it on to you the recipe used by one of the most famous magicians of all times.
Wear a smile when you talk on the phone
I have always told the Service Engineers that you got to be speaking truly to your customer with a smile on the phone! Absurd? It is true that customers do not see you at all but they can feel by listening. They will know that you are speaking to them with a smile. They like to be friends and work with you, if possible, for a life time!

Customer’s Culture
When the Duke of Windsor was the Prince of Wales, he was scheduled to tour South American. Before he started out on that tour, he spent months studying Spanish so that he could make public talks in the language of the country and the South Americans loved him for it!

I would like to share with you some of the words of wisdom which I have learnt along the way:

Words of wisdom
Don’t criticize, condemn or complain.
Give honest and sincere appreciation.
Take into account other person’s interests.
Arouse interest and wants of other people.
Be genuinely interested in other people.
Try to be in the shoes of your customers.
Hard work will pay back - this is the driver for keeping up with the hard work.
If you think the product is too expensive to sell, you will never able tot sell it!
If you think that you are satisfied with your sales record, you will never be able to make new sales record in the next quarter.
Murphy’s Law always applies.

The Rain Maker
I have seen an American movie “The Rain Maker”. That is a very good story that highlights to us that “Sometimes, the weakest can also the winners!”

If you believe you will be the winner and then you have to work hard to pursue the target.
You would be the winner!
